How to add page numbers to a PDF
Add consistent numbering to a document for reading, printing, or sharing. Choose a position and format, set the first number, and save a new copy without changing your original file.
How to use this tool
- Select a PDF. Choose one PDF up to 50 MB from your device.
- Set the numbering. Choose a position, format, and starting number. You can leave the first page unnumbered.
- Name the output. Keep the suggested name or enter another filename.
- Create your copy. Select “Add page numbers and download PDF.” The new file is created and downloaded in your browser.
- Check the result. The confirmation shows the document page count, pages numbered, and output size.
Number formats and positions
Choose a plain number, “Page 1”, or “1 of 10”. Place the number at the top or bottom of each page, aligned left, centred, or right. The starting number can be changed to continue numbering from another document.
Important limitations
Password-protected, damaged, or unsupported PDFs may not open. Editing a digitally signed PDF changes the document and can invalidate its signatures. Keep the original and check the numbered copy before sharing it.
Privacy and file security
Your selected PDF is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to PDFArmy. The PDF editing library loads from a third-party CDN, so an internet connection is needed to load it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Enter the number you want in “Starting number”. The next numbered page continues from that value.
Can I leave the first page without a number?
Yes. Select “Skip the first page”. Numbering starts on page two using the starting number you set.
Can I choose where the number appears?
Yes. Choose a top or bottom position and align it to the left, centre, or right.
Will this change my original PDF?
No. The tool creates and downloads a separate numbered copy. Your original file remains unchanged.
Are my PDF files uploaded?
No. Your file is processed in your browser and is not sent to PDFArmy. The required PDF library loads from a third-party CDN.
Can I use this on a digitally signed PDF?
You can try to add numbers, but editing a digitally signed PDF can invalidate its signature. Keep an untouched signed original.
